LETTER: Why do many managers reward their friends & cronies & overlook those who really deserves the rewards.

    Dear Editor,

Please allow me some space on your platform to express my disgust of how some of us, as managers, abuse our position to elevate and bring onboard friends & cronies into the establishment that we work for.

Such actions seem to be very prevalent in the govt and statutory sectors, causing some of the beneficiaries to become square pegs in round wholes.

Many of us who are in an authoritative position, sometimes allow our ego to become inflated and hence, allow the devine human attribute of humility, respect, empathy & compassion to be swept out of the window, causing our subordinates to be treated with disdain and in a condescending manner.

As a manager & simultaneously a strong believer in Christ, I have made a pledge to speak out against any injustice that I think has been metted out to any coworker of mine, whether that person is a messenger, a clerk or a fellow manager.

Isaiah 10:1-2 states “Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees, to deprive the poor of their rights…”Fair must be fair. The job site should be a level playing field for all. What goes for Peter should go for Paul.

In recent times, where I am employed, I have seen several wrongs metted out to some of my colleagues, resulting from the improper & unprofessional decisions, made by the hierarchy to hire & promote persons up the corporate ladder…..

For instance, persons have been seen dining frequently at the same dinner table with those in authority and not producing as much as their peers but yet get promoted infront of others who deserves a promotion. In addition, it also been seen that persons who belong to the same extracurricular organization as the respective manager, slips through the cracks to get hired. Of course such actions prompt many questions.

Obviously, the ” knee in the neck ” trauma that the Afro American Mr George Floyd experienced, comes to mind and it seems as though it has become a prevailing epidemic within the work place. Unfortunately, a selective set of employees are left to be stifled on the job, due to the dishonorable practices executed from some of those in authority.

Sadly, although the records may show that hard work & dedication have been put into the organization by many of these sidelined employees, some have become victims of discrimination and nepotism and hence, they have been (1) overlooked (2) pushed to the back of the corporate bus and (3) have the corporate ladder pulled from under them causing such employees to be stagnant in the organization.

It is very unfortunate, that the colleagues of these victims choose not to advocate loud enough for justice on their behalf. Perhaps their voices will only be heard when that ” injustice ” reaches to their front door.

If we are Christian nation and follow the doctrines and principles of Jesus Christ, then now is the time to be our brother’s keeper. While Jesus was on His mission, He got radical and spoke out against the wrongs that He saw, so why can’t I?
