    Letter to the editor:

Dear sir/madame, I am raising awareness regarding serious concerns surrounding tourist safety during Antigua Carnival following a traumatic incident involving my husband, who was randomly stabbed by an individual while attending the celebrations.

Carnival is promoted as a time for visitors and residents to come together, celebrate, and enjoy Antigua’s culture. However, incidents involving random attacks on innocent people are deeply concerning.

I believe visitors attending large events should be made aware of potential safety concerns, particularly where there may be limited CCTV coverage and challenges in identifying and apprehending perpetrators after such incidents occur.

My husband was transported to hospital following the attack, where he was left waiting for several hours despite suffering stab wounds and requiring urgent medical attention.

In my professional opinion as a healthcare professional, qualified nurse and radiographer with more than 15 years of experience working in London hospitals, the level of care provided was extremely concerning.

Due to the lack of appropriate treatment received at the hospital, I had to arrange for my husband to be taken to a private surgeon the following morning, where he finally received the necessary suturing and medical care.

The details of his injuries, treatment, and the circumstances surrounding the delay in care have also been shared with the private surgeon who treated him.

I am sharing this experience not to discourage people from visiting Antigua, but to highlight important concerns around public safety, emergency response, and the need for improvements.

Tourists and residents deserve to feel safe when attending major cultural events, and anyone injured in a serious incident should receive timely and appropriate emergency medical care.

I hope that by raising awareness, meaningful discussions can take place around improved security measures, better surveillance, and emergency healthcare responses to ensure no other person or family experiences what we have endured.

Thank you for taking the time to read.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

    Kind regards,

    Kisha
