Police say excessively dark vehicle tints remain a significant enforcement problem in Antigua and Barbuda, as authorities prepare to intensify efforts against motorists whose vehicles do not comply with the law.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Lisbon Michael confirmed the concern during an interview on ABS’ Antigua Barbuda Today.

Asked whether excessively dark tints were a major problem for law enforcement, Michael responded: “It is.”

He said the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda has partnered with the Transport Board to tackle the issue.

“We basically partnered with the Transport Board to ensure that we have this issue under control,” Michael said.

Michael said Transport Board examination officers will periodically join police during enforcement operations because they have the technical equipment needed to examine vehicle tints.

The government is also moving to strengthen the police’s traffic enforcement capabilities with new equipment.

Plans have been announced to purchase 25 tint meters, 25 professional breathalyzers and 12 handheld radar devices at a cost of approximately US$30,000.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has acknowledged that some tinting is useful because of the country’s climate, but said motorists whose tints are too dark would be in violation of the law and would be required to remove them.

Michael said cooperation between agencies will be important as authorities address traffic violations and broader public safety concerns.

“We need all hands on deck,” he said. “There is no simple solution to the whole issue of crime.”
