An area of low pressure west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands could develop into a short-lived tropical depression or storm later Thursday.

As of 2 a.m. Aug. 27, satellite imagery showed that showers and thunderstorms associated with the system, designated AL96, had become better organized overnight.

Forecasters said advisories could be initiated later Thursday if the current development trend continues.

The system now has a 70% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone within both the next 48 hours and seven days.

However, environmental conditions are expected to become hostile beginning Friday, likely ending the system’s chances for further development.
