The government says funding is available to purchase long-range night-vision drones for the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda as part of efforts to strengthen crime-fighting operations.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne said the proposed drones could have an operational radius of up to 29 miles and would be flown routinely across the country to support surveillance and police investigations.

Browne said the government is awaiting confirmation from the police commissioner on the number of drones required before proceeding with the purchase.

“We’re still waiting to hear from the commissioner as to how many of those drones you require with night vision,” Browne said during the Browne and Browne Show.

The chief of defence staff has also been asked to review the specifications and determine whether the proposed equipment would meet the operational needs of the security forces.

Browne said the government was prepared to purchase the drones as soon as police and defence officials approved the specifications.

“Pull the trigger; the money will be forthcoming,” he said.

The announcement followed a request from Assistant Commissioner of Police Lisbon Michael for additional resources, including forensic and ballistic capabilities and specialised training for investigators.

Browne said the country now has a forensic laboratory and that the government recently met with senior police officials to discuss other equipment requirements.

He said police had also received additional vehicles, including unmarked units, to support surveillance and operational activities.

The number of drones under consideration, their total cost and the expected delivery date were not disclosed.
