The Minister for Health, Wellness, the Environment and Civil Service Affairs, Michael Joseph, has held discussions with Mr. Chinmoy Naik, High Commissioner of India to Antigua and Barbuda and Mr. Vijay Tewani, Honorary Consul of India to Antigua and Barbuda, to explore opportunities for strengthening bilateral cooperation in healthcare, medical assistance, traditional medicine and climate change initiatives.

The discussions focused on identifying practical areas of collaboration between Antigua and Barbuda and India, with particular emphasis on leveraging India’s advanced healthcare capabilities to support the needs of the local health system.

Among the key areas explored was the possibility of establishing a partnership through which Antigua and Barbuda could benefit from India’s specialised medical facilities, expertise and capacity to provide medical assistance. Discussions also included the potential provision of medical equipment and other resources to address identified needs within the country’s hospital system, as an initial step towards developing a broader and sustained partnership.

Minister Joseph underscored the importance of exploring partnerships that can strengthen healthcare delivery and expand access to specialised services for the people of Antigua and Barbuda.

“India has developed considerable capacity in advanced healthcare and specialised medical services, and there is an opportunity for us to explore how that expertise can support our healthcare system. We are particularly interested in identifying practical ways to address some of our immediate needs, including medical equipment and other hospital resources, while laying the foundation for a partnership that can grow and deliver benefits over the long term,” the Minister said.

The discussions also examined the potential for collaboration in traditional Indian medicine, including how relevant practices and expertise could be explored for possible application in Antigua and Barbuda, where appropriate.

Climate change and environmental sustainability formed another important part of the engagement. Both sides explored opportunities for cooperation in solar power generation and the supporting infrastructure necessary to strengthen renewable energy capacity.

Minister Joseph also highlighted the importance of expanding climate dialogue beyond formal government engagements by encouraging greater participation from civil society, particularly young people, in discussions on climate action.

“Our engagement on climate change must extend beyond the negotiating table. We have an opportunity to encourage our young people and wider civil society to participate more actively in the discussions that will shape our collective response to climate change. By strengthening cooperation with India in areas such as renewable energy and climate engagement, we can explore initiatives that serve the interests of both countries,” he stated.

The climate discussions are expected to support continued dialogue in the lead-up to the upcoming Conference of the Parties (COP) and beyond, with further engagement anticipated as both countries explore areas of shared interest.

The meeting forms part of ongoing efforts to identify opportunities for international cooperation that can support national healthcare priorities, strengthen environmental resilience and advance sustainable development.

Minister Joseph expressed an interest in continuing discussions with the relevant representatives to determine how the areas identified can be developed into practical initiatives and a longer-term framework for cooperation between Antigua and Barbuda and India.
