The Caribbean Development Bank has approved a US$56.2 million loan to improve schools and teaching in Antigua and Barbuda, benefiting more than 10,000 students.

The government will contribute US$23.565 million, bringing the project’s total value to about US$79.8 million. The Ministry of Education will implement it between 2027 and 2031.

Sir Novelle Richards Academy, Antigua Girls’ High School, Ottos Comprehensive School and Golden Grove Primary School will be upgraded. The facilities will be accessible to people with disabilities, designed to withstand hurricanes and flooding, and serve as emergency shelters.

The project will also introduce a mathematics improvement programme across all primary and secondary schools, support more than 750 teachers and education officials, and expand assistance for students with special educational needs.

Other measures include school improvement grants, support to modernise the Education Act and designs to develop two secondary schools into technical and vocational training centres.
