Prime Minister Gaston Browne says Antigua and Barbuda will incorporate more cultural experiences into its tourism offerings to increase visitor spending and help local artists earn a living.

Speaking Friday at the opening of the National Performing Arts Centre, Browne said the government sees culture as an economic asset that can create jobs, support businesses and strengthen the country’s appeal to visitors.

“Our culture is not merely a part of our identity. It is an important economic asset that we will monetize and utilize to strengthen our tourism product, to create jobs and showcase the best of Antigua and Barbuda to the world,” he said.

Browne said the government had agreed to further integrate culture and cultural artifacts into tourism, providing visitors with more distinctive experiences while increasing the earning capacity of residents.

The new centre, developed from the former Deluxe Cinema, forms part of that effort, providing a home for music, dance, theater and storytelling.

He said the objective was to develop local talent, generate employment, support entrepreneurship and create sustainable opportunities, particularly for young people.

“By so doing, we are ensuring that our artists are not merely celebrated for their creativity, but are also empowered to earn a livelihood from it,” Browne said.

The prime minister also outlined plans to expand the facilities surrounding the centre. A neighboring building has been acquired for conversion into a creative arts studio, and he said he had instructed that another adjoining property be purchased.

The expanded facilities would support artistic development and help performers prepare for opportunities beyond Antigua and Barbuda.

“We’re seeking to develop artists who can compete globally. So again, do not limit your ambitions,” Browne said.
