American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine is expanding access to its medical degree program with the addition of a new summer entry point. Starting in September, AUA will move to a trimester schedule, allowing students to begin their education journey in one of three entry periods. Students will now be able to join AUA in September, January, or May.
This strategic move allows students who would have otherwise waited until the fall to begin their studies, earlier, in May—helping them advance through the curriculum more efficiently and enter the medical field sooner.
“This new trimester reflects our commitment to meeting students where they are and supporting their academic goals with greater flexibility,” said Dr. Peter Bell, President of AUA.
“By offering an additional start date, we’re empowering future physicians to take control of their timelines and move forward with confidence.”
BENEFITS OF A TRIMESTER SCHEDULE
The additional entry point is designed to better accommodate the diverse academic and personal timelines of aspiring physicians from around the world. It underscores AUA’s commitment to accessibility, opportunity, and a student-centered approach to medical education.
“Our students come from diverse backgrounds with varying needs,” said Joshua Stagner, Vice President of Admissions, Marketing, and Alumni. “The push from August to September for the Fall trimester, and the addition of the May start, provide a timely and practical option that aligns with the realities of today’s applicants while preserving the rigorous academic standards AUA is known for.”

The introduction of the trimester schedule will not affect tuition rates; however, it will reduce the overall financial burden for students. By shortening the total duration of time spent on the island, students will incur fewer expenses related to housing, transportation, and daily living—making medical school more affordable and more accessible.
“Many of our students are balancing academic demands with family responsibilities,” added Stagner. “Spending less time away from home can significantly ease the emotional and financial strain of medical school.”
The trimester schedule is designed to maintain academic quality while enhancing efficiency. One benefit will be to the Global Health Track. Previously a separate entity, moving forward it will be incorporated into the curriculum so all students can benefit from it. Students may also become eligible to apply for residency up to one year earlier, depending on their entry point into the program, thereby improving their competitiveness and accelerating their professional progression.
Another key benefit includes expanded eligibility for financial aid. Students who need to repeat a term will remain eligible for Title IV US federal financial aid, thereby reducing the financial and academic disruptions often associated with such circumstances.
