Elizabeth Makhoul, Chairman of the Antigua Barbuda Festivals Commission, delivered heartfelt remarks at the official launch of “King of Soca,” a biography of acclaimed Trinidadian soca artist Machel Montano.
During the event, Makhoul warmly addressed attendees, highlighting her friendship with Montano, spanning more than three decades. She described their connection as one rooted in mutual respect, shared vision, and unconditional friendship, transcending the boundaries of music.
Makhoul paid special tribute to Elizabeth “Lady” Montano, the author’s mother and biographer, commending her crucial role in shaping Machel’s successful career. She praised Lady Montano’s skill in chronicling the journey of nurturing her son into a global cultural figure.
“This book, ‘King of Soca,’ is not only Machel’s story but your legacy in motion,” Makhoul remarked, acknowledging Lady Montano’s dedication to fostering her son’s talent with discipline and cultural pride.
Reflecting personally, Makhoul spoke about Lady Montano’s influential role in instilling integrity, grace, and a sense of purpose in Machel. She characterized the book as a testament not only to Machel’s accomplishments but also to his mother’s unwavering vision and dedication.
“Tonight is more than a book launch; it celebrates a legacy built beat by beat, moment by moment,” Makhoul concluded, describing Lady Montano as “the crown behind the king.”
