A proposed marina and waterfront development at Fort James could attract tens of millions of dollars in investment as the government moves forward with plans to transform the historic area into a major tourism and recreation destination.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne said during his weekly radio programme that local investors will be given priority as the government develops what is being called the Fort James Renaissance Park.

According to Browne, the project will include a marina, restaurants, retail spaces, recreational facilities and potentially a small hotel, while preserving public access to the beach and historic fort.

He revealed that a developer has already expressed interest in spending up to US$12 million to restore and redevelop the fort itself, provided its historical character is maintained.

“We have a developer who has approached us to redevelop the fort. He says that he and his partners will spend up to US$12 million to redevelop the fort,” Browne said.

The prime minister also disclosed that another investor has indicated a willingness to commit significant resources toward the construction of a marina, though the government would prefer local participation wherever possible.

“If we have a local group who can put a significant marina there, our preference would be to lease it to the locals,” Browne said.

Cabinet has already approved EC$5 million to begin infrastructure works at the site. Browne said the funding comes from a recent EC$6.5 million tax settlement with Sandals Resorts.

The redevelopment plan includes expanded parking, green spaces, entertainment facilities and beach improvements aimed at reversing erosion and enhancing the visitor experience.

Construction on the initial phase is expected to begin no later than September, with officials hoping substantial progress will be visible by May next year.

Browne said the project is intended to create new economic opportunities for Antiguans and Barbudans while strengthening the country’s tourism product and preserving public access to one of the island’s most popular beaches.
