The National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) says it is considering rescheduling an evacuation drill at the National Performing Arts Centre as preparations continue for next week’s Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

In an update issued Wednesday, NODS said the exercise, intended to test evacuation procedures ahead of the CHOGM opening ceremony, was interrupted Tuesday by a maintenance problem at the facility.

The agency confirmed that smoke detected inside the building came from a faulty air conditioning unit undergoing testing.

Fire personnel noticed the smoke during a dry run, prompting authorities to order a full evacuation and call the Fire Department.

    No injuries were reported.

NODS has not announced a new date for the drill or indicated whether the air conditioning fault has been repaired.

The National Performing Arts Centre is scheduled to host the CHOGM opening ceremony next week.
