An 82-year-old Barbadian attorney has been sentenced to more than six years in prison after admitting to stealing BDS$855,000 entrusted to him for a property purchase.
Hilary Jeffery Nelson was sentenced on Thursday to six years and 64 days at Dodds Prison.
The money was intended for a property transaction in Barbados but was misappropriated.
Justice Pamela Beckles condemned Nelson’s actions, saying lawyers had a duty to protect clients’ funds.
She warned that such misconduct could damage public confidence in the legal profession and harm Barbados’ reputation.
Nelson was also ordered to repay the full BDS$855,000 within 12 months or face an additional two years in prison.
He has begun serving his sentence at Dodds Prison.
