Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama has praised Ghanaian nurses working in Antigua and Barbuda, saying their service has earned Prime Minister Gaston Browne’s appreciation and helped create opportunities for other Ghanaian professionals across the Caribbean.

Meeting members of the Ghanaian community in St. John’s on Wednesday during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, Mahama said Browne had personally commended the nurses’ contribution to the country’s healthcare system.

Mahama described the nurses and other Ghanaian professionals as good ambassadors, saying positive reports about their work had encouraged more Caribbean countries to seek workers from Ghana.

Requests, he said, extended beyond healthcare and education to civil engineering, construction and other professions.

The president urged nurses to maintain compassion and patience, stressing that people receiving care were vulnerable and needed encouragement alongside treatment. He also encouraged them to share their experiences with colleagues in Ghana.

Speaking at the same gathering, Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said the government was pursuing further labour mobility agreements to place trained health workers and teachers in Caribbean countries.

Ablakwa said Ghana had signed agreements with Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Lucia and other countries. Further negotiations were underway, he added.

He said the arrangements could help Caribbean countries expand public services while providing employment opportunities for Ghanaian professionals.

Ablakwa also disclosed that the prime minister of the Bahamas had requested 300 teachers from Ghana, which he attributed to the strong reputation Ghanaian workers had established abroad.
