SOURCE: ANTIGUA OBSERVER- A total of 34 vehicular collisions were reported over the carnival weekend, spanning Friday, August 1st to Tuesday, August 5th.

This figure is noted to be one of the highest recorded during a Carnival weekend, as stated by Corporal Brendan Sutherland, an officer with the Traffic Department of the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda.

Sutherland recalled that the last time he remembers the island experiencing such a high number of collisions was during the Independence celebration two years prior.

“Having 34 collisions over the Carnival weekend is not a favorable situation for us. Our island covers only 108 square miles, and 90 percent of the roads in Antigua and Barbuda are flat,” he remarked.

The officer stated that if more motorists had exercised caution while driving, many of these accidents could have been prevented.

He cited examples such as an individual falling asleep at the wheel, others being under the influence of alcohol, and several instances of speeding; behaviors, they consistently advise the public to avoid.

“It is crucial to avoid driving while intoxicated, as it is a serious offense. Beyond the legal implications, alcohol can lead to numerous impairments, including blurred vision, irrational decision-making, and drowsiness, among other effects,” he emphasized.

Before the Carnival season, Sutherland mentioned that the RPFAB had been advising individuals who typically consume large amounts of alcohol to consider carpooling and leaving their vehicles at home while enjoying the festivities.

“Consider taking a ride, perhaps using a bus or a taxi with a friend, moving forward,” he constantly urged.
