The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) is monitoring a new tropical wave in the Atlantic which could develop into a named storm in the coming days. If it strengthens, the next name on the 2025 Atlantic hurricane list is _Erin_.

According to meteorologist Matt Devitt, the system is expected to track westward across the Atlantic over the next 5–10 days, with the potential to become the first hurricane of the season. However, forecasters stress that it is too early to predict its exact path or potential impacts.

Mr Devitt cautioned against relying on individual computer model runs that depict worst-case scenarios. He noted that such models can be inconsistent, often shifting significantly from day to day. Instead, he advised focusing on ensemble forecasts, which take into account multiple possible tracks from both American and European weather models.

Current model ensembles show a wide range of potential paths — from making landfall anywhere along the US coastline to curving away from land altogether. Timing for any potential US approach, if it occurs, would be in the week of 18–24 August.

Forecasters emphasise that, at present, there is no immediate threat and the system has yet to develop into a tropical depression or storm. They expect clearer guidance once the disturbance becomes better organised.

The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November.
