Harold Lovell, former UPP leader, announced last week his return to politics to run for the All Saints West seat, receiving widespread support. Lovell, who retired in January 2023, cited positive feedback as validation of his decision, which he described as difficult and thought-provoking.
“It’s been very encouraging. The response in everyday life has been overwhelmingly positive, and many see my return as a strategic move for the UPP,” Lovell said. Barbara Coates, the previous caretaker, stepped aside to make way for Lovell after extensive discussions with her campaign team and party leadership, including UPP Political Leader Jamale Pringle. She described the transition as a mutual and respectful decision.
Lovell, who narrowly lost the previous election in St John’s City East by four votes, will challenge Anthony Smith in the upcoming by-election. He clarified that Coates approached him with the request to step aside and emphasized his support for her candidacy rather than any desire to oust her.
The move was endorsed unanimously by the All Saints West branch and community leaders. Lovell expressed gratitude for the support and enthusiasm surrounding his comeback.
