A major runway expansion has begun at VC Bird International Airport in Antigua and Barbuda.
The $55m EC project will be carried out in eight phases, including a new turning bay and resurfacing of the existing runway. Officials say the upgrades will bring the airport in line with International Civil Aviation Organization standards, improving safety and efficiency.
The works are being managed by Aecon Company Ltd in partnership with Kelly Construction Inc, with much of the aggregate sourced locally.
Civil Aviation Minister Charles Fernandez, who joined airport authority officials at the launch, said the project would boost tourism and commercial aviation.
The expansion is due to be completed by November 2026.
