Apathy, that’s what it felt like watching West Indies against Pakistan in the first T20I. Why are we still selecting Johnson Charles? His strike rate since the last T20 World Cup is 120, and that is unacceptable for any opening batter. What happened to Shai Hope opening the batting? Who in their right mind sent Gudakesh Motie to bat at number four? Akeal Hosein, our powerplay specialist strike bowler, usually finishes his spell before the halfway mark (10 overs), why is he being held back? Why, because the Pakistan batters were left handed? Sloppy fielding, Johnson Charles dropped a sitter in the inner circle, Hope couldn’t keep his legs closed, Rutherford guarding the boundary with butter fingers.
I saw Pakistani players catapulting on the boundary trying to save their team boundaries, I saw every one of them using rags to keep their fingers and the ball dry, I saw bowler and captain setting the field to make WI batters open up their arms, only to deceive them by sending the ball faster, so that it skids on. For God’s sake, Roston Chase, he knows the bowler is going full and wide, step across and hit the ball over extra cover, or go straight down the ground. If you back away, he is either going to miss or it’s going to hit the toe end of the bat!
School boy cricket, Floyd Riefer is the batting coach? I swear he was the bowling coach, and the fielding coach, and the head coach at one point in time. I suspect nepotism is making a resurgence, the Riefer family seem to have a lot of influence in West Indies Cricket, he and his cousins get a lot of preference across formats. Kaecy Carty should’ve made the starting eleven ahead of 37 year old Charles, it could only be that he is Sammy’s country man that he is still given the nod. Is anyone listening to Ravi Rampaul, what is Avenesh Seeteram doing behind those screens? What are WI doing?
