Sports Minister Daryll Matthew has praised the National Pool Players Association (NPPA) for its professionalism and urged members to continue elevating the sport’s image in Antigua and Barbuda.

Speaking at an NPPA event on Sunday, Matthew commended the association for its organised presentation, noting that many national groups fall short in this area. “I want to congratulate you for taking pride in yourselves, your clubs and your association to present yourself properly all the time,” he said.

Matthew acknowledged the challenges of running such an organisation, citing the “80/20 rule” where a small group often does most of the work, sometimes using personal resources. He lauded the NPPA leadership for consistently delivering a national championship each year.

He also encouraged members to move the sport away from its traditional association with bars and into the mainstream, arguing that structure and organisation would attract wider public interest.

Highlighting the talent within the sport, Matthew challenged the association to produce nominees for the National Sports Awards, saying it was time pool players, coaches and administrators were recognised among the country’s top sporting figures.

“You have the ability right now to change our mindset and our culture,” he told members. “Continue to work hard, be disciplined and be organised.”
