The Antigua and Barbuda National Domino Association officially opened the 20th World Council of Domino Federations (WCDF) Domino Tournament with a vibrant March Past and Opening Ceremony that made its way down High Street and into Heritage Quay, filling the heart of the city with music, colour, and national pride.
Led by the lively music of the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda Band, teams from eight countries, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, United States of America, Dominica, Anguilla, Guyana, and Barbados, proudly paraded in national colours and waved their flags high.
On the official saluting stand, His Excellency Sir Rodney Williams, Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda, took the ceremonial “eyes right” as each contingent passed in review. He was joined by Honourable Daryll S. Matthew, Minister of Education, Sports and Creative Industries; Mr. Daniel McBeth, President of the WCDF; Dr. Colin Greene, Commissioner of Sports; and Mrs. Ena Dalso Henry, Permanent Secretary of Sports.
The formal programme included the presentation of countries and their national anthems, the introduction of tournament officials, welcome remarks by President McBeth, and a featured address by Minister Matthew.
A ceremonial highlight came when His Excellency Sir Rodney, Minister Matthew, and President McBeth engaged in the traditional Domino “Slam Off”, a spirited three-hand exhibition game that drew loud applause and laughter from the crowd.
National Domino President Ms. Carol-Faye Bynoe expressed her satisfaction with the successful start to the tournament, stating that she and her executive were “pleased with the turnout and the smooth execution of the ceremony after all their hard work.”
Following the Opening Ceremony, the first of two fundraising events – a Pullarama – was held, with the second, a dance at JR’s, scheduled for August 15. The tournament continues until August 18, promising exciting matches, spirited competition, and lasting camaraderie among participants.
