Leeward Islands and British Virgin Islands – 14 August 2025

A tropical cyclone alert has been issued for the Leeward Islands and the British Virgin Islands as Tropical Storm Erin continues to strengthen while moving westward across the Atlantic.

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services confirmed at 11:00 GMT that Erin is currently located approximately 804 miles east of the Leeward Islands, with maximum sustained winds reaching 60 mph and higher gusts reported. Forecasters warn that the storm is expected to intensify into a hurricane by Friday.

Officials have stressed that while no watches or warnings are currently in place, conditions may change rapidly, and residents are advised to remain vigilant. The risk of storm-force winds is considered moderate, around 40–50%, for Anguilla and parts of the British Virgin Islands, and lower for other islands in the region.

Authorities have urged the public to prepare for potential impacts, including heavy rainfall, rough seas, swells, and strong gusty winds. A slight shift south or continued westward movement could bring Erin dangerously close to the islands late Friday night into Saturday.

The next official update from the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services is expected at 17:00 GMT, or sooner if the situation escalates.

Residents are advised to monitor official channels and stay prepared as the Caribbean enters the peak of the 2025 hurricane season.
