Jurors in the Nigel Christian murder trial heard detailed forensic DNA evidence on Monday linking clothing and other items recovered from multiple locations to two of the accused men.

An FBI forensic DNA examiner, testifying virtually, said Saleim Harrigan’s DNA was found on gloves recovered at Cassada Gardens — where Christian’s truck was abandoned — with likelihood ratios of 49 quadrillion and 42 trillion. Blood-stained overalls found at Perry Bay produced an even higher likelihood ratio of 210 septillion linking them to Harrigan.

Wayne Thomas was identified as the most probable contributor to a shirt recovered at Perry Bay with a likelihood ratio of 3.4 octillion.

DNA belonging to the Crown’s key witness — who testified he drove the accused on the day of the killing — was also detected on clothing items, consistent with his claim that he had lent them to Harrigan and Lasean Bully.

A ski mask recovered during police searches contained no DNA matching any of the accused, a point the defence highlighted as it continues to argue the item was planted.

Prosecutors allege Harrigan, Thomas and Bully abducted senior Customs officer Nigel Christian from his McKinnons home at gunpoint and shot him on a dirt road in Thibou’s on July 10, 2020.

The DNA expert is expected to face cross-examination when the trial resumes.
