More than 3,200 people have signed a petition urging Antigua and Barbuda’s government to protect public access and parking at Jolly Harbour Beach.

    The online petition,

“Protect Public Access to Jolly Harbour,”

had recorded 3,287 verified signatures and more than 4,200 shares when the figures were published.

Organisers are calling on Prime Minister Gaston Browne and his Cabinet to ensure that residents and visitors continue to have practical access to the popular west coast beach, including sufficient parking.

They say the issue extends beyond the existing parking area and raises broader concerns about public access to beaches as coastal development increases.

According to the petition, the area has been used for decades by Antiguans and Barbudans, residents, visitors, yacht owners, villa guests, businesses and tourists.

The organisers say they support investment and responsible development but want future projects to take account of the public’s right to access the coastline.

They are also asking the government to apply the same principle to future coastal developments, warning that decisions made now could affect beach access for future generations.

The petition points to the long history of the Jolly Harbour area, including archaeological evidence of human activity along the coastline dating back thousands of years.

Supporters are being encouraged to share their personal reasons for valuing beach access and circulate the petition to increase pressure for government action.
