King Charles III has arrived in Antigua and Barbuda ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), marking a major moment in the country’s preparations to welcome leaders from across the 56-member Commonwealth.
He landed at the VC Bird International Airport at about 7:45 p.m to fanfare and a guard of honour.
He was greeted on the tarmac by officials including the Governor General and Prime Minister Gaston Browne.
The British monarch’s visit follows official engagements in the Bahamas and Guyana as part of a nine-day Caribbean tour.
Queen Camilla is expected to join the King in Antigua and Barbuda for a series of official engagements, including celebrations marking the country’s 45th anniversary of independence on November 1.
According to Buckingham Palace, the royal programme includes attendance at the Independence Day Parade at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, a church service, engagements at Government House and meetings highlighting environmental conservation, heritage and economic development.
As Head of the Commonwealth, King Charles will participate in the CHOGM opening ceremony, attend a dinner with Commonwealth leaders and host a reception for newly appointed heads of government.
His arrival comes as Caribbean governments intensify calls for Britain to acknowledge its historical role in the transatlantic slave trade and address demands for reparatory justice.
Climate change, trade and development are also expected to feature prominently in discussions during the summit.
The royal visit is scheduled to conclude November 4, when the King and Queen depart Antigua and Barbuda.
