A high surf advisory has been issued for the northern and eastern coastlines of several Eastern Caribbean islands from midnight Friday through the weekend, with forecasters warning of dangerous marine conditions.

The alert, issued at 19:30 local time on Thursday, affects Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat, St Kitts and Nevis, Anguilla, and the British Virgin Islands.

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service said waves could reach between 6ft and 10ft, with some areas seeing swells of up to 12ft. These conditions are expected to generate strong, potentially life-threatening rip currents, as well as possible coastal flooding and beach erosion.

Authorities have cautioned swimmers, boaters, and beachgoers to avoid affected areas. “Strong currents can sweep even experienced swimmers out to sea,” the advisory warned.

Beach erosion, road splash-over, and disruptions to marine-based businesses are also possible. Officials recommend swimming only at beaches with lifeguards on duty and advise that anyone caught in a rip current should float and signal for help rather than attempt to swim against it.

Residents and visitors are urged to monitor updates from the meteorological service and local media throughout the weekend.
