A High Surf Warning has been issued for Barbuda, with authorities warning of dangerous sea conditions and the potential for coastal damage.

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service said long-period swells are expected to generate breaking waves of more than three metres (10 feet), with some reaching as high as 4.6 metres (15 feet).

The warning also extends to Anguilla and the British Virgin Islands, with conditions expected to vary throughout the day. In Barbuda, hazardous surf is forecast to persist until midday.

Officials have cautioned that the rough seas could trigger life-threatening rip currents, coastal flooding and significant beach erosion. Marine infrastructure, coral reefs and coastal roads are also at risk.

Residents and visitors are being urged to stay out of the water, avoid exposed coastal areas, and swim only where lifeguards are present or at sheltered beaches.

The public is advised to monitor updates from the meteorological service and trusted local media, and to exercise extreme caution along affected coastlines.
